California craftsman home gets reno & LA-cool boho decor

You wouldn't guess from looking at the front porch of this home in LA's Silver Lake neighborhood that it was ever anything but buff, boho and California chic. In a short eight months, owner Leila Sayegh, with the help of interior designer Karen Vidal, took it from neglected and tired to humming like a Beach Boys' hit.

I love the butter yellow doors with the light brown siding. All those extra pops of color in the accessories tell you the inside is going to be something else. Something BOHO.

Period details, like this built-in, are what drew Sayegh to the 1,556 square-foot house, even though it needed work on the foundation and a new roof, in addition to lots of updating.

The very boho kilim-covered chair, from Anthropologie, was an impulse buy. "I bought it the instant I saw it," she said. "I didn't have any plans for it. I just had to have it." Looks to me like it was born to sit right where it is now.

The "before" kitchen was a style mashup, with an ancient stove and 1980s track lighting. "I toyed with enlarging it," Sayegh said. "But I'm not chef-y, so this size is right for me." In the end, "all" it needed was top-to-toe refitting.

My favorite thing? I love how all that's needed for this galley kitchen to say "boho" is that gorgeous Moroccan rug.

And if I wasn't already envious enough, there's a built-in banquette breakfast room. The ikat-covered boho folding chairs are also from Anthropologie.

In the den, Sayegh had the bottom half of built-in bookshelves removed to make way for a daybed with storage drawers tucked beneath so the space could double as a guest room.

The big alteration to the master bedroom involved replacing one large window with two smaller ones to allow for placement of her bed in between. The room is also a lesson in simple boho design: That colorful woven throw across the foot of the bed takes the room from plain to beni ourain.

The bathroom was gutted, but I like that it still has a period feel with the Moroccan tiles and black accents on white. The clawfoot tub was the only part of the original bathroom that stayed, but even it had to be restored and was moved beneath the new window. The bathroom-sized crystal chandelier is from the 1940s.

The back porch is just as cheery as the front! When can I move in?
