Take a boho (road) trip to Woodstock & stay at the Bob Dylan

If you came of age in the 1960s and 70s, you remember Woodstock, the music festival, as a bonanza of hippie-boho delight. Maybe YOU were even THERE. If not, you saw it on TV and read the reports of heavy drug use, free love, lots of casual nakedness, and, of course, great music.

I, alas, did not attend, given that I’d only turned 12 the previous month. But I watched the newscasts with fascination. I was what's known as a good kid—too good for my own good, in retrospect—so I was oblivious then to the over-the-top sex and drugs part. But the freedom and joy I saw, well, it was contagious and captivated even goody-two-shoes pre-teens growing up in waspy Midwest burbs.

If you’d like to recapture a little bit of that August 1969 spirit (as I would), consider a stay at the Hotel Dylan in Woodstock, NY, which aims at putting you back in the hippie spirit with boho modern chic décor and 1960s-era entertainment. By that I mean board games, croquet, and vinyl records (what did you think I meant?), so take the family.

And in case you didn't know, the Woodstock festival site is 43 miles southwest of Woodstock proper, in the town of Bethel, on what was then a 600-acre dairy farm. But the crowds aren't usually as bad as in August 1969, and I've supplied some great music to play on the way and as you scroll through this post.

The amazing Joni Mitchell wrote “Woodstock” from the perspective of someone who wasn’t there but wanted to be, so I completely identify. You'll find a link to the better-known Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young version of her song at the end of the post.

Got your ear buds in, music launched & speakers up?
Then onto Hotel Dylan...

If I stayed here I'd spend my time trying to figure out how to get this chair into my suitcase. How 'bout you?

Granted, the outside smacks more of motor inn than hotel, but that WAS the traveler's friend of the 60s you know, and you want your trip to be true to period, right? Just be thankful you don't have to pitch a tent and share too few port-a-potties with 400,000 hippies.
