Cupboard conversion to boho-modern art installation—DONE!

Last week I shared changes happening in and planned for my midcentury-boho-modern-chic living room. Over the weekend my wounded warrior husband started walking without artificial aids, and together we checked one more item off the living room to-do list.

Here’s some background to jog your memory:

I wanted to hang these four framed, retro art prints on the overhead cupboards that divide the living room from the kitchen. Remember those screwed- and glued-shut golden oak cupboards with the cathedral top that I can’t stand? I wanted to disguise them!

Chris and I conferred over how to hang the prints without damaging the doors. He suggested we glue quarter-inch deep blocks to two sides of each framed print back to create a surface even with the frames on which to mount Command hanging strips that would then adhere each print to the raised panel of said doors.

But sometime after deciding how we’d do this, Chris irritated tendons in his legs and put himself out of commission for several weeks. Since he’s not one to encourage me to use his power tools, even under supervision (wise man!), the plan stalled.

By late last week, I was pretty antsy about it. It was then I got the idea of buying pre-cut pieces of wood at a craft store instead of waiting for Chris to feel good enough to buy and cut the wood blocks for me.

That got everything going again.

On Friday Chris said he felt well enough to sit with me at the kitchen table and help. I removed the sawtooth hanger the prints came with using pliers, and while I measured and marked centers on the blocks and the frames, Chris matched them up glued them in with wood glue.

We let the glue set up overnight, then adhered the Command strips Saturday. I was going to try to hang them myself, which was, honestly, a literal and figurative stretch for me without a step stool (which is another dangerous idea for clumsy me). But Chris said he felt good enough to do the hanging if I stood across the room and told him when it was centered.

I was elated! Not just that this chore was finally getting done, but that my husband was finally walking again without searing pain! He put away the walker and cane Sunday and seems to be on the mend at last.

And the prints look great, too! I was a bit worried they’d look too busy with my kitchen as the backdrop, but I don’t think that’s a problem.

See for yourself how it turned out...
